As a result, many people in Africa suffer from waterborne illnesses such as cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhea.
One solution to this problem is the implementation of water wells in communities across Africa. Water wells are a reliable and sustainable source of clean water, which can significantly improve the health and wellbeing of those who rely on them. By drilling water wells, communities can gain access to safe drinking water that is free from contaminants and diseases.
One of the most significant benefits of water wells is the reduction in waterborne illnesses. According to Water.org, waterborne illnesses are responsible for 3.4 million deaths each year, and 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries such as those in Africa. Water wells provide a reliable and sustainable source of clean water that can help reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses in communities. With access to clean water, people can drink, cook, and clean without fear of getting sick.
Water wells also provide economic benefits to communities in Africa. Women and children are often responsible for collecting water, which can take up to six hours a day in some communities. By providing a reliable source of clean water, water wells can significantly reduce the amount of time spent collecting water.
In addition to health and economic benefits, water wells also have environmental benefits. Surface water sources such as rivers and lakes are often overused and polluted. This can have negative impacts on the environment, such as reducing biodiversity and contributing to climate change. Nonetheless, there are several organizations working to provide water wells to communities in Africa. One such organization, and the one that we work with, is Water Wells for Africa, which has been drilling water wells in Africa since 1981. The organization has drilled over 6,000 water wells, providing clean water to over 3 million people and counting!
That is why, here at Moby, we are ardently dedicated to make a change. Water wells are a critical solution to the lack of access to clean water in Africa. While the cost of drilling and maintaining water wells can be high, organizations are working to provide access to clean water for all.
